Sucky Blowy thing
« on: 09 October 2007, 09:00:22 »

I have embarked upon changing my (it turns out) extremely work cam belt. I followed the groovy DVD up to the point where the inlet bar type thing that goes across the cam belt cover from left to right. On the DVD, it was demonstrated that there is a one way valve in there. This demonstration was done by a blow and a suck...So, i repeated this on mine and ended up with a mouth full of shit.  [smiley=cry.gif]

I presume my valve thing has gone bye-bye.

What to I need to ask for to replace it? I can't really be asking for a sucky blowy shiney thing now can I?

Paul.

PS...it's for a 1998 3.0 V6 mini facelift.

"A Secondary Air Injection non-return valve for an Omega please."  Is the correct phrase but will, no doubt, be met with a blank look, " a round shiny thing" might get better results. ;D
I think they are expensive, you could try a breakers for one but will have to remove a few to find a good one (also used on the 2.0).

As an alternave you can disable the complete Air Injection system and blank off the pipes leading to the exhaust manifolds....its not needed for any emission checks and isnt fitted to later engines.

So, what you are saying is that I can simply remove this and plug up the ends???

Anyway, what problems could I expect if I simply refit the dodgy one?

To disable the system, remove the pipe across the front of the engine and insert some bungs into the rubber couplers that remain on the manifold pipes. (Plumbers 15mm end feed stop ends fit a treat).
Reach up under the passenger side front wing, ahead of the wheel and find the connector for the air pump, disconnect this and tape up the ends if you ever want to re-connect it.

You can remove the pump, hoses and vacuum operated valve if you wish but you must leave the electrical solenoid plugged in or else the EML will light up.

I take it that removing it will not cause any bad things to happen?

I have finally got round to doing this...but I can't find the air pump to disconnect it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Try under the front bumber area, near side in the corner. (better known to you as the soft prangy thing at the sharp end)

Good luck, Pat

It may be possible to remove the solenoid and the relay (where fitted).

Basically the relay and solenoid will have a set resistance across their coils, so a simple test meter will determine this, then by working out the current draw of the coils will let you know what size resistor can be fitted to replace them and fool the EM that they are still in circuit.

I'll be doing some odd jobs this week on mine so will check these and hopefully get some results posted.
