255/40/17 rear tyres
« on: 02 December 2007, 17:56:26 »

Does anybody know if 255/40/17 tyres will go ok on an estate with 7 1/2" wide wheels.
Cheers

Sure you probably know that original fitment is 235/45/17. I would say no, however flashy or good a deal they look. That is REALLY wide as well, even if they fit, it will probably steer like a dog. Insurance companies aren't very keen on you changing this kind of thing either. 'Compromising safety' and all that  ::) Just my 2 pence worth.

The 255's would be on the rear only keeping the 235's on the front which is the same set up you get on merc amg and bmw 7's etc only difference is they have 8" wide wheels.

My 840 has 265/35x18s on the front, but the wheels are 9.5" wide. Front tyres are 235/40 on 8" wide wheels.

The reason they're set up like this is to reduce the tendancy to oversteer, i.e. the rear has a little more grip than the front. It tends to be only the higher powered BMWs that come like this, i.e. M3, M5, 540i, 8-series, etc. Usually the V8 engines and above, although the 330Ci sport and M3 have it with 6-pot engines.

It may not be particularly beneficial on the Omega. Certainly I have stuck with the factory 235/45x17 size, apart from anything else the wider tyres are more expensive, and there may be issues with rubbing.

Bob Dent's rears are pretty wide. Might be worth asking him how wide and what it handles like.

7.5" sounds on the narrow side for those tyres  :-/

If you are going to fit 255's on the rears, then it's best to fit them on 8.5" or 9" rims, if you fit them to 7" rims, when you corner, the rear end will feel like jelly and because the bead area of the tyre will not sit right against the bead area of the rim, it could leak air, (Not very good) Hope this is of some help  :y

Sound like I'm better sticking with the 235's it was just an idea. I think the wheels are 71/2" but I will have to check again.
I used to have a 740 bmw with 235 fronts and 255 rears but the wheels where 7" & 8" saying that my wifes has got 245/40/17's on 71/2" amg rims on the rear and 225/45's on the 7" fronts which are the standard fitting from mercedes.

A 10" tyre on a 7.5" wheel?  That sounds just plain wrong to me!
Your tyres are going to look like this:

/___\

Can't be good for the side walls..?

8 1/2" to 10" recommended for 255s according to Toyo.

See here for sizes http://www.toyo.co.uk/productdetail.php?identity=products&product_id=2.
