Is it worth fixing?
« on: 07 December 2007, 14:32:34 »

As well as my new 2.5 V6 Elite I have a 97 2.5 V Auto. I'm getting rid of it as about two weeks ago I started it up and after about 2mins of driving it went into 'limp-home' mode

Its stayed like that ever since, D works for about 30 secs when I first turn the engine on then it has to be shifted manually. Also when shifting between 1 - 2 there's a huge bump and jolt froom the back end though shifting through the others seems fine.Theres also no lights in the 1,2,3,D,R,P lettering and the computer displays "Automatic Gearbox". I'm also pretty sure that when in reverse my reverse lights aren't coming on.

So not being that experienced mechanically is it worth a fix or just split for parts?

Any advice be much appreciated.

It could be as simple as the selector switch on the box. IIRC, when the auto box is in "manual" mode due to the electronics getting the hump 1>2 actually changes from 1>3 which might explain the jolt. Second gear is only accessible when the gearbox is controlled electronically.

Also worth checking the fuse for the auto gearbox controller and that all the connectors in the system are fully home.

If the gearbox drives reasonably OK manually shifting the gears there's a good chance it's something trivial.

Worth checking the fluid level too, of course, and if the fluid's 60K+ miles old you may as well change it.
