Stuttering and missing under load
« on: 01 December 2007, 07:52:29 »

Not really sure where to go with this now so i'm hoping some knowledgeable bods on here can shed a bit of light on it.

The car was missing and stuttering really badly the other week when it was under any sort of load, it also sounded as rough as a bears backside at idle,  discovered that my cam gaskets had blown (again).  Now replaced the covers with some ally vectra ones and so far there are no more leaks, i've also replaced all the HT leads and changed the oil whilst i was down there and it has made the car run 100 times better but there is still a bit of a misfire when under load although it's nowhere near as bad.

It only tends to miss if i'm in a high gear and relatively slow speed (30 - 40mph) and then try to accelerate in that gear, it's fine if i drop down to a lower gear and boot it.

Does the oil also knacker the spark plugs, I had these out and cleaned them the best I could but i imagine they still have a coating of oil, also could it have affected the coil pack.

It's only a minor problem but it wasn't there when I got the car and i'd like it running right.

Any suggestions?

First off, I would replace the spark plugs, cleaning them is never very satisfactory.

Missing under load is usually an ignition related problem - I'm getting the same when using LPG

First off, pull out all the leads, inspect them to make sure they're all well insulated and not cracked/split

Then, look at the plugs...

The misfire may have stressed the DIS pack to the point where it's starting to fail.

hmm, my 1st thoughts are DIS. do plugs first, as they are cheapest.

remember, driving with a misfire is a cat killer

I'll change the plugs and see if that helps but really aren't looking forward to having to change the DIS pack, big hands and very tight spaces don't really go well together.

It only misses if the revs are low and i'm in a high gear and try to accelerate, if i shift down and then accelerate it's perfectly fine so cats shouldn't be suffering too much (I hope)

Yup, I too can testify to missfires killing cats.

Now I have a new one and still have a missfiore, despite new plugs, leads, dis pack, timing belt check, comopression test and vacuum test.

My advice - get a missfire sorted asap and don't trust anything a main dealer says to you!
