The 2.5 is a VERY reliable lump, as is the 3.0. The 2.0, whilst underpowered, is also a very strong engine. The key to keeping them all alive is 3k oil changes...

i really dont get asked for the other 2 just the 2.5 strange! , oil change every 3k seems a lot , would i need to do this on the 2.6?

thanks for your help guys i appreciate it.

main reason is people dont change cam belts every 40000 miles or 4 years and when it goes knackers the heads !! bloody good motors bud all of them if well looked after !!  ;)
Couldn't agree more Markey ;)

Totally agree, and by the way Omega everytime, depends on how much you cherish and look after the car depends on how much rust appears, if any.

GM V6 lump is bullet proof and very reliable. The reason they go left right and centre is because owners skip the mandatory timing belt change at 40k/4y, but this is not a weakness of the engine it is a straightforward maintenance issue which incidentally affects the vast majority of modern belt-driven engines. I suspect the reason you did not see that such a demand for 4-pot engines is that on a 4-potter removing the head and fixing the problem is not that expensive so the engines get repaired, but with the V6 it is just too much work so a second-hand engine (or heads - with all of the 24 valves already in) makes more sense.

The 2.6 is easier for DIY than the 2.5 as it has less auxiliaries i.e. no EGR, ICV, HT leads, etc (it is all ECU-controlled on 2.6), but it is otherwise very similar to the 2.5.

Very powerful and smooth engine with very reasonable MPG for its size.

Go for it and get the cambelt and tensioners changed asap, and you will be fine....

I will also confirm that the 2.5 is a reliable lump, as are all the petrol Omegas.  If you are getting a lot of requests for heads, that will be due to snapped or incorrectly fitted cambelts. The interval is 40k/4yr, no exceptions, whatever dealer/seller/mechanic may say. Also, it is about the only engine on the market that cannot have its belt changed without a locking/timing kit, despite what mechanics may say.

The same goes for the 'warped cam cover' myth put about by incompitent mechanics.  If you do have to replace cam covers, use genuine gaskets. And clean the breather system.
