Cambelt change 3.2 Have I a problem
« on: 31 December 2007, 16:36:26 »

Hi All,
I am in middle of cambelt / waterpump etc change. Have done all the timing and have camshaft locks in place etc.
I find the replacement idlers pulleys /tensioner etc are different to those taken off.
I have a genuine VX kit, and I have phoned dealer spares dept to check just before they closed, and they assure me that I have correct kit for this model and have checked it with chassis and engine numbers.

The one I removed is stamped 01 but the new replacement is stamped 6B
On the replacement kit, it puts the top adjustable pulley much more to the right so is not in the centre of cams 2 and 3, infact quite close to cam 3. It has spigots fitted on 2 of the fixing bolt holes, and there are counterbores in the cylinder head to take them. The one I have removed has no spigots.

I am fairly sure someone has replaced cambelt & pulleys maybe with wrong type as this model isn't supposed to have an adjustable lower pulley but it had one, but had been fitted with wrong (larger head bolt and too short so only screwed in about 6 threads.

Can anyone tell me if the top pulley is in fact more to the right than centre on the 3.2 L 2002 Estate model? Or any other ideas of why the difference.

I am also changing the thermostat and if it hadn't taken so long to remove the bolt holding the transfer pipe I'd have known of problem at lunch time

Roger

I wouldn't trust the parts dept as far as I could throw them, they got mine wrong as well..

I think you have the wrong one, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along shortly..

What is the Engine number of your vehicle?

I'm assuming that if your original fitted kit has a fixed roller post bank 2 then it is the latest kit fitted - 93172354

Hi engine number is 08580282

The roller fitted post bank 2 (lower roller) was adjustable, but had been fitted with wrong bolt.

Also, when I checked timing prior to removing belt, all cams were slightly retarded, but I couldn't get them correct with the adjuster to get the cam locks in place, it was already moved as far as it would go to get the cams where they were.

That engine number fits in the last range so should be fitted with non adjustable roller after bank 2

Oh and 6B is the correct backing plate for kit part number 93172354.

Hope that helps.

I would guess that the wrong kit was fitted last time  :o
GM did away with the adjuster after bank 2 in these later kits.

Hi All,
I am still puzzling over cambelt change.
Have all gear in place fitted belt timed etc. but don't understand why top adjuster pulley is so far to the right, close to cam 3 instead of more or less in the centre of cams 2 & 3.

Has anyone changed belt on 3.2 L model and found the same?

Looking at the workshop documents the positioning of the top idler over towards cam 3 is correct for the 3.2. The lower idler should be to the right of the water pump, roughly in the middle of this belt run, as opposed to the centre below the water pump.

Sounds like someone has bodged this in the past using the wrong kit. Good job you have found it before something went wrong :y
