Diesel Injectors
« on: 08 January 2008, 15:02:11 »

Ever since I filled the TD with water in the floods last July, there has been a misfire when cold starting which soon goes either when motor is hot or revs are increased. Together with a bit of a pronounced rattle this has now been diagnosed as an injector or 2 sticking, most likely as a result of rust having formed during the couple of days before the water was drained out
The use of Diesel Injector cleaner additive kind of confirms that the injectors are not sticking because of contamination as it did not improve after use
Question is what is the best solution - I cannot afford not to have the car off the road for more than a day, so was wondering if I should obtain another set of injectors, get them refurbished & fit them or take a chance on fitting them without an overhaul?
Who has got a set of injectors for sale - anyone? If so any idea of condition?
Alternatively, where is a good source of reconditioned injectors, or is there anyone out there who could remove, recon & refit the same day if I brought the car to them?
It's a BMW lump (The Boy's favorite!)

Get them ultrasonic cleaned, best way to do it IMO. Whats to say the 'new' injectors wont go like that in a few months?
Redex and alike don't always clear up dirty injectors. How deep did the car get?

If they have rusted due to water in the fuel then cleaning wont help....

Is it just the 1 injector thats shot, and is it the one with the sensor (wire coming off)?

It appears to be more than one, but not all 6
I drove the car into deep water without realising how low the Air intake was so it sucked water in & Hydro-locked the engine
Water did not get into the fuel tank, the only way it could have reached the injectors was via the air intake

Ah, right, its just I may have had a spare injector without the sensor.

Whats not right with engine? Poor start? Poor running?

When cold when starting/ idling you can clearly hear & feel that it's misfiring with a pronounced 'Diesel Knock'
As soon as you give it some throttle the misfire goes but returns until the motor gets warm when it goes completely
Let it cool down again & restart & the problem returns
I believe that it goes away when the revs pick up because the pressure also increases due to the injector pump being mechanical - correct?
If an injector(s) was sticking would it not 'dribble' rather than spray thereby causing the problem, the increase in pressure would cause it to adopt a spray pattern & therefore ignite correctly?
