Camshaft cover sealing compound
« on: 12 January 2008, 21:34:05 »

I have to replace a camshaft cover gasket on my 3.2 in the next week or so.
I read in one of the posts not to use the green VX sealing compound but the black. (Can't find the post now)
I have asked VX spares for the black compound but they tell me the only sealant they now have available is the green stuff.

What is the problem with the green type, or does any one know where I can get the "black stuff"

Roger

The green sealant is for sealing metal to metal. The black is still available I bought some about 4 weeks ago.

If you have trouble getting the Vx stuff then LocTite 598 (Flange Sealant) should do the job. Should be readily available in your local halfrauds...

yeah the black stuff is RTV, The Green stuff is for metal flange sealing and most of the time can be found sealing the Cam Carrier to cylinder head on FWD four pot single cam engines.

The Grey stuff is quite new and is used on sump pans in place of a gasket, it comes in a small tube taht fits in a caulking gun.

I'll get the numbers and prices next week once i get back to work and have sorted all the mail order parts out

Cheers

It is quite simply a general purpose RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanisation) compound, I used to use these regularly in my DIY days for anything that needs sealing e.g. water hoses, water pumps, oil cooler,  etc. It is resistant to both oil and hot/boiling water.

It is commercially available in black, white, or clear. It is not a 'liquid gasket' compound and it is not grey (a fact that is also mentioned in the Maintenance Guide).

If you are not familiar with RTV compounds and are unable to identify one (they have typical sharp smell and sticky feel), then it is best if you stick to the Vx-branded product.
