Check cam covers as a starting point....is it smoking off the exhaust manifolds as well?

When doing cam covers you must also clean the breathers

Hmm for a first check, pull the plug leads and see if the plug wells are full of oil. This would suggest your rocker gaskets need replacing.

i would say cam covers mine went and oil went everywhere, inc exhust got a bad smell of burnning oil.

easy enough to sort but a bit time consuming.
make sure you clean the breathers as well as these would off coursed them to go.

There are very good guides for both in the maint section

Chris has just looked he has taken the HT lead out and it has oil all over it! so it does look like the rocker gasket!

Drivers side bank is easy to check the plugs, passenger side is rather more difficult as its hidden by the idler valve and cable tray.

It needs doing pretty quickly as this will lead to misfiring, damage to leads/dispack and ultimately damage to the catalytic convertors.
Been there done that.
There's a guide in the maintenance section, make sure you clean the breathers at the same time.

Any warranty with it? Can you take it back to the garage for them to do.

sold as seen which translates to tough luck. so the leak is due to blocked breathers (on a car which has a full service record) would this explain the gurgling noise from the front of the engine? Thanks guys for all the help and advice.

Gurgling noise sound like its coming from under the plenum? If so most likely a slight air leak...EGR gasket or Plenum O rings may need looking at...pretty easy jobs.
