V6 oil loss
« on: 26 February 2008, 15:11:49 »

Had the "check oil level" message while coming up the M4 last night.

Checked it at lunchtime today, and sure as anything, it's almost off the bottom of the stick  :-?

Seems really odd, as I have never ever had to top up the oil on this car. Also, I had a good look underneith and it's all bone dry.

Clutch is fine so I don't think it's coming out the back of the crank

Could it be consuming it? there is no blue smoke I can see.

There is also no mixing with the coolant.

If its not dripping it will be getting burnt.  Piston engines, by default, consume oil.  Check the manual for the GM estimated ammount/1000 miles....

Oh yes, it's not unacceptable usage. I believe it's something like half a litre every 1000 miles in the book, and I've done at least 3k since the last fill.

Just odd that it was fine for 2500 miles, and then burnt it all in the last 500  :-/

The 'check oil' warning comes up on mine when motorway cruising sometimes....  Level on the stick is invariably at mid point....

I'm not convinced it's on a totally flat surface, I'm going to put just half a litre in, and then check it again in the morning when it's been stood flat at home...

As I recall it is about 1L from top to bottom mark on the stick.  If its done that in 500 miles that is a lot.   I thought the book said 1L per 1000 miles , which I also think is very high - probably covering bottoms.

Strange that there is no sign of it :-/

There's no doubt that when I'm making the engine work hard on my 2.0l, eg. pulling the caravan, oil consumption rockets. I had the 'check oil level' warning on such a run on the M6 last summer and after filling up haven't had it since with normal running and topping up.

mine uses about half a litre between changes, but I have a misterious leak as well.

the 4 cylinder cars do seem to use more than the 6 cyl, I had a zafira with the 1.8 and then one with a 2.0, both used at least a litre every 750 miles and the dealer felt this was normal
