Door stay (Or rather the fact it doesn't)
« on: 06 March 2008, 10:28:14 »

Apparently there is an issue with my driver's door: Either it is possessed with a manic intention to try and snap my leg in two at every available opportunity or something has gone wrong and the thing won't stay open.

It's not the most urgent of problems, if the door refused to open completely then I would be on the phone to the garage, but it's something I would like to have fixed at some point.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the procedure for rectifying this sort of thing?

Hi Davey....mine too: and they`re heavy doors too, Ouch!  :o

There`s a 'How-To' on this in the maintenance forum-section.....The stay roller-plate probably needs spot-welding/riveting back onto the door-jam.
I`ve been putting off doing mine as I`m a bit nervous of welding near a car with so much electronics!
As an alternative to welding I think there is a 'repair kit' available from Vx.

If the door stay is still attached to the A post then there is no welding required at all.

It's probably the door-stay assembly that's failed and come apart.
It happened on mine recently. Get a complete assembly from a breaker's yard, and change it - I got one for a fiver!

You'll need to remove the door inner panel first, prop the door open, then undo/remove all three bolts on the assembly.
Now the fun begins, as it's 'brain surgery' to access it. The whole unit is wiggled out within the door, and you'll probably find that the inner portion has dropped into the bottom of the door, but it will come out with patience.
Refitting is a reversal of this, and requires the same patience - let us know how you get on fella!

Thanks for the swift replies  :)

There isn't any creaking noises and everything appears to be moving as vxhall intended, but without working as it should.

It's a minor niggle and therefore someway down the overall list of priorities, first jobs for this weekend are (1) try cleaning the crankcase breather and (2) Oil and filter change.

Although I will have a good poke around in there and see if there is anything obvious. Sooner or later it's going to get my leg though  :-/

On second thoughts...

The BBC website is telling me that on Saturday we have heavy rain and on Sunday hail showers.

Might have to pass on the car maintenance this weekend. Wish I had a garage  :(

Or your fingers, which would be much more serious.

^^^^^^
Absolutely correct. Do this in a sheltered spot and make sure the door is propped/tied/wedged open. Take no chances  :y
