Do sensors have a magnetic tips
« on: 07 March 2008, 16:17:09 »

Can any onelet me know if sensors have magnetic tips. One of my mechanics are iof the opinion that sensors have magnetic tips so to check if they are good you point them to a metal and it attracts.

Awaiting to check the wiring on the crank sensor and change it if damaged.

The crank sensor probably does, but it'll still be magnetic after it fails because it's normally the wiring that fails.

Cam sensor appears to be excited by an AC waveform so won't be magnetic.

It's not a reliable check either way.

Unlikely on the sensor, though I guess it depends on which sensor.  Certainly cam and crank ones are hall effect, so about as magnetic as the area of body that your mechanic is speaking out of....

(Hall effect pick up proximity of magnetic objects)

since they hardly go bad, should i just check the wires if good, then change

I agree with Kevin on this one. The Crank Sensor has a magnetic
effect, dunno about the Cam, but it is the wiring that is the problem
and checking for a magnetic effect will prove sweet fa.

I brought the ends of my new good crank sensor and my old
duff crank sensor towards each other and they repulsed each
other.

The problem with the old one, was that the oil and moisture had tracked
down the cable, got trapped between the cable and the outer
protective sleeve, cooked, cracked the sensor, and infiltrated the
body of the sensor.

So it doesn't really matter a fig, regarding serviceability, if it's
still magnetic.

They ALWAYS go bad in the end! Would you like me to create a poll on who's replaced the crank sensor on the V6!?! Most members even carry a spare! The cam sensor is not much better iirc  :-?

Read the codes and follow the advice on here  :y
