Rough running..
« on: 06 April 2008, 18:56:01 »

Hello...
I placed a thread a week or so ago reguarding a miss-fire/ juddering that only appeared when it had been raining whilst going up through the gears... However its now started when doing 70 on the motorway which is very worrying...I had the cam covers, plugs, leads and fuel filter changed a month or two ago so does this appear to be the dis-module on its way out?
     Cheers....

Before condemning the DIS, have you checked the plugwells for water? We have had a couple of cases of water running off the scuttle and filling the plugwells causing a misfire lately, especially if you usually park the car facing downhill.

Just done a round trip to Liverpool then to Manchester before it started again so surely the engine is more than hot enough to evaporate any water that may drip onto the engine?

If when they did the cam-covers they didn't clean the breathers you may have blown the covers again. A check of the plug wells for oil will show this. The old beast had the symptoms you describe.. 5 out of 6 plugs had oil in them .. 2 I couldn't see the top of the plug !!!!  No wonder it was misfiring !!!

i did ask the garage to clean the breathers out and he assured me he did as he said they were not to bad so i assume he aint pulling a fast one? i did the plastic breather on the top of the engine myself....
If i did have oil in the plug holes again wouldn't it mis-behave all the time? i can go days without playing up?

Oil is an insulator, so if it is not actually between the electrical bits things may still work. As the oil heats up it gets thinner and "flows" more .. so has a greater chance of getting to the wrong places...  ??

I don't know the answer .. I'm just guessing .. but once I did my breathers/cam covers and had dry plug wells the car ran like a dream .. :)

I'll go and have a look at the plug well again (seeing as you can only check one) to see if any oil is in there. i was kinda hoping to put this to bed one way or another so i can source the parts i may need but "hey ho" i'll get there in the end.... i wouldn't know or trust myself to remove the plenum and other bits to check all plug wells......

Hi,
Although I don't have a DIS pack, instead CPP units, the similar symptoms you have were what I had. That was eventually digagnosed as faulty coil pack on one head, and symptoms only showed up when engine was really hot, ie 100 miles + motorway and there was no oil or water in plug wells.

Do you not have any codes stored ?  Might show missfire.

hello...
dont know how to dp the codes and theres no EML light on either.the mis fire at speed only came on today as opposed to only being there whilst going through the gears so as the problem has altered i assume its the dis module to
