2.5TD Intercoolers
« on: 08 April 2008, 14:04:31 »

I have just fitted some new H/lamps (thanks to TheBoy for the advice) whilst under the car I looked at the intercooler removing the shroud released leaves and all sorts. I didn't realise it has a fan attached how do I test whether this works?

Thanks

Hi flymofred, I have been on a similar mission with my inter cooler recently...

I understand that is is supposed to come on when your electric rad fans start. I pulled it out and it was seized solid, a lot of WD40 and elbow grease later it is free'd up, trouble is - my electric rad fans never come on cos of the viscous fan keeping the engine ice cold all the time - hence intercooler fan never comes on either.

I shall be hard wiring it through a switch so I can control it.

Without it fitted I did notice the car was a lot more lively too  :)

Thanks for that. how much aggro is it to get the fan out. Although mine can be turned by hand it doesn't strike me that 12v's is up to the job

It wasn't too difficult to drop the whole intercooler out, just a rubber mount at the top and bottom both on the outside edge. Undo the 2 jubilee clips on pipes and unclip the wiring for the fan.

Once out, a female torx is required to undo 2 bolts to release the fan housing from the intercooler.

Running mine without the fan at the min, just the housing.

I connect mine to a 12v booster pack and let it run for an hour or so - that frees it up!
