Omega 3.2v6 Sump Plug
« on: 26 April 2008, 19:55:47 »

Took the beast in for an oil change at Kwik Fit, but the kid couldn't undo the sump plug.

Its round with a hexagonal aperture in the middle to loosen it, which was damaged.

He tried mulgrips on the round part but to no avail. Quoted me (can you believe this) £25 for a replacement sump plug plus labour to get the old one out if he can.

Any ideas how to do this job inexpensively.

What do you think of sucking the oil out, so I don't have to remove the sump plug (haven't found any place that will do that up to now)

Your opinions please

Far better to get the plug off. You need a Torq bit to undo them but if it's rubber ducked then you may have to drill it.

They should only be tightened to 10NM, alloy sump and plug with an O ring. I guess the last person didn't have a torque wrench!

Can you update your profile. Where are you?
If you have a friendly mechanic, get him to weld a bolt onto the sump plug, undo it with spanner / socket and replace sump plug with new one from Vx. My mechanic has done this many times to various items where bolts etc have become rounded.

Its a torx bit, not a hex.

Mine has a chisel bite on one edge where Willie Winker removed it previously.

Its an O ring beneath the mating surface and thus does not need the strength of Samson to tighten.  Nip it up is more than enough...

And, correct.  Only a couple of quid for a replacement.  Just don't strip the threads on removal/replacement.....    ;)
