Runs at 95-97 but on gradients in this weather heads for 100, have to turn heating on full to get guage down. I'm guessing silted rad. Electric fans work ,I think viscous doesn't.  Is Radflush or similar any use? I'd better do something before I cook the Head.

Had similar problems, then the water pump bearing collapsed
Pump replaced and noticed that the Viscous fan was permanently locked up (you can tell by the increased noise like a jet engine in reverse thrust) but as a consequence the temperature now steady at 92.5 C
It may have been the sudden lock-up of the fan that did for the pump of course
So doubtless TB will point out that the Viscous fan is unecessary (which it probably is) but if the problem stems from a silted rad, then the Viscous fan does seem to serve a purpose

Check the shite BMW designed water pump still has all it vanes on the impeller!

If the water pump wasn't circulating properly , then surely the heater woudn't be able to dissipate the heat. Viscous spins happily hot or cold. Dont fancy checking pump. Do I have to remove the rad to do this?
Just failed irish mot this am. Run out on front and rear also 1 rear self leveller

The Viscous fan will rotate regardless of whether it has 'locked up' or not the difference being that when not locked in theory it is possible to stop it rotating. Grabbing hold of the blades is not advised as you will probably loose your fingers. I have heard tell that it can be stopped when not locked up by inserting a rolled up newspaper, but then again I have never tried it & reckon that you would create a lot of confetti!
The water pump can be changed without removing the radiator mine was when it failed. I expect The Boy will also suggest changing the thermostat while you're checking the pump.
I intend to flush mine out this summer, just need to find the time. If it helps lower the temperature then I may consider removing the Viscous fan (PS it has a LH thread)

Check pump.  If viscous fan comes undone easily, 30mins tops. Don't break the aux belt tensioner!

If that doesn't cure it, flush cooling system a few times.

100C on guage is nearer 110C on engine, which is beyond safe limit, and head will crack.

If you have been lax with oil changes (ie, NOT every 3-4k), you may have real issues with 'black sludge' blocking or restricting oilways.
