hey all, im new here so hi

a friend has recently given me his omega as he was gonna scrap it, he told me to come here for help so here i am, the oil light is always on at the moment and hes told me the oil pump has had it, apparantly a new one from vxl is approx £500 let alone fitting. due to the oil pump being knackered the engine is obviously making a fair bit of noise at the top end (sounds like a diesel) do u guys rekon it could just be the cams and lifters and if i replace the pump it'll go away or should i replace these at the same time. im pritty handy with cars so ill be undertaking all work myself as to reduce costs, im also a member of the autobahnstormers club as i already own a vxl senator 3.0 24v

so if anyone could point me in the right direction or give any advice on this i would really appreciate it.

p.s its a 2.5 v6 engine. S reg, and on another note i wont be buying a brand new pump as ive found a 2nd hand recon one with 6months guarantee for £50

I would say if it's been driven with the oil light on your best bet would be a replacement engine.

It's likely to have damage to the bottom end bearings and crank journals. If the cam journals have got damaged they are machined direct into the head so quite expensive to rebore.

Unless you fancy taking the engine out and doing a complete overhaul just buy a 2nd hand replacement, IMHO. This will be more cost effective than overhauling too IME.

Before you start tearing the lump down I would bang the pump in and see what happens. On my LC I replaced all 24 lifters and until they pumped up it sounded like a tin bucket full of bolts. Takes a good 20 minutes for them to shut up as well. If the engines been run lots without oil pressure I'd be more worried about a grumbly bottom end tbh.

Pump replaceemnt is er....challenging!

I would drop the sump bottom pan off and check the pickup as a first port of call.
