Heater bypass valve
« on: 16 May 2008, 19:53:03 »

Is the heater bypass valve the plastic thing that 3 coolant hoses are connected too??

What does the HBV work, and how can it fail? (Symptoms, and why)

ok, that's the part. Now, how does it work? What does it do, and how does it fail (except for leaking)??

Hello 'Albus' follow the lead of 'Richierich', the answer is yes they do fail.
I visited Bergen many times in the '90s, you are very lucky to live in such a lovely place, was driven around Norway on a number trips by my companies agent in a 2.5 diesel CD Omega, he was 6'-7" and 20 stone, the Omega just the wright size, deep snow, thick ice, snow chains, 10 deg below zero, frozen diesel, not a problem.
Best of luck with the HBV.  :y

P.S. The seals just wear out and leak, cannot be repaired, just replace. Good luck.

Vacuum operates the diaphram with causes the water to either enter the heater matrix or 'bypass' it, depending on the setting.

Can fail in various ways, normally cracking of the sidewalls which can manifest as a water leak when the climate is on or off.  Switching the climate on or off can sometimes start or stop the leak, if you follow...

Ok. Can the diaphram get stuck? If you turn the climate on and it only partially opens cos it's stuck?

Yes Bergen is lovely, but it rains alot:(

if it helps: vac on means matrix is bypassed.  Vac off means that there is no heater bypass.

they can also stick open 'cos mine was stuck in the non bypass mode

The reason I ask is because I am wondering if this could be the reason (or one of them) for my bad coolant circulation??
