Shock my td broke down!!!
« on: 27 June 2008, 21:20:54 »

Ok guys and gals,
little quiz here lets see who knows the answer!!! a little story to set the scene then you can get going with your diagnosis and ideas,

Car started  as usual in the morning, drove 34miles to a place called scrapyard avenue in Malaga nine scrapyards all next door to one another in a line about 3/4 mile long, so you park at one end and do them all for best price!!! walking of course, so been there about an hour and finally ended up at the furthest one from the car with all needed parts for the car i was fixing!! so my mate walked back to car and told my wife where i was waiting with the bits she starts car and drives slowly up to me never getting out of 2nd gear, she stops turns car off we load parts and tools in back, and jump in car, turn ignition on to be greeted with a christmas tree dashboard of all dash lights flashing on and off turn key further round and starter motor  just clicking EEEKKKK
wassup with it ????after trying various things  to sort it gave up and got 6 scrapyard spaniards togive me a push and reluctantly the car started albeit with the engine management light on it drove home, almost cutting out on two occasions on the motorway where it appeared to lose all power then picked up again,I didnt dare slow down for junctions in case it cut out completely!!! got home and found the problem but what do you think it was?
as clues it was 53miles overdue for its normal 3k service but all filters and fluids were changed on the previous service CAR HAS NOW DONE 113387 MILES 41,000 IN MY CARE chipped since i have had it
and upgraded where i think it needed it (which is a fair bit)
what you reckon then?? :o

Lose battery or jammed starter, but was that actually a clue I highlighted from the 1st post

Jammed starter wouldn't cause a christmas tree of lights, though...

Give us a clue - what was the code that was logged?

I 1st thought of a lose wire (the one on the back of the alternator)  but the 53 miles over the service bit threw me, am still wondering if it is a red herring.

Did your wife set off in 2nd gear and labour it, shaking a sensor, but then if no codes logged, then maybe not the cae.

Is this a 2.5TD? My guesses are:-
Timing chain stretched - Bad running
Gearbox ECU - Your chipped ECU has thrown a wobbler.

Ye focked the rubbish into the boot dislodging something electrical.
Only time I had to walk away from a TD (3 so far) was when I lost the sump on a yump. 1/2 tin isopon and it ran another 10k before sale.

sorry guys internet dropped out and only just got it back!!
however couple of you were close
what had happened was the pos terminal on the battery had arced/burned away under the clamp!!! top of it looked fine and i checked the battery water levels last service also the clamps for tightness just looking at it at the scrappys i thought like some of you of alternator and starter and earth strap but none of them made any difference, so when i got back and took the battery off to find that to say i was amazed would be an understatement!! there wasnt enough of the terminal to put the clamp back on and as the battery was over 4 yrs old anyway i cut me losses and put a new gel battery on,
needless to say it was well vaselined around the clamps to prevent it happening again!!
