coolant loss
« on: 02 July 2008, 18:10:33 »

hey up guys, ive got a 2.5 elite and after months of water loss, and not been able to find it, i'm now up to replacing about 2 litres a week. but now ive eventually seen drips, it seems to only pump water out when the engine is hot and revving quite high. after crawling underneath ,its coming from the passenger side rear of the engine.as you look up there is a square block with a hole in it right underneath the exhaust manifold and it seems to run between the exhaust manifold and the top of this square block. anyone had this befor? is there a penny under the exhaust manifold??ive checked th HBV but thats dry and getting anywhere else at the back is as you no tight..cheers

If you are sure its not the HBV (no brown staining around it?) - remember it only leaks in certain modes of heater/ac setting - you are most likely looking at something in the V leaking - stat, oil coller plate or the coolant bridge at the back.

You can just about shine a torch underneather the front of the plenum and see down to the stat area at the front of the V - see if that looks wet..

Sorry as soon as I hear 'coolant loss' the advise must be replace the HBV, it costs £35. Ok if the coolant is running down the front of the engine maybe not. As already stated the HBV leaks at odd times, so with the weather changing from 25c down to 8c the heater controls are always being altered. Spend the £35 on a new GM HBV for piece of mind. If the problem persists look somewhere else with confidence the HBV is ok.

iv watched the water dripping from underneath, then put my hand all the way round the HBV and looked at it with torch. its bone dry with no sign of any leak or staining, but i may well change it anyway to be sure. iv looked threw the front under the plenum and apart from a little residue of oil (which is coming from rocker covers) there is no sign of oil. i think i will have to remove it to investigate the "V" . is there any coolant pipes at the rear passenger side of the engine? or core plugs ??
ive just had a thought regarding the HBV. looking in the engine bay there is one pipe off the HBV that heads towards the passenger side. does anyone no where it goes?and does water run threw that pipe all the time?? if not, i'm wondering if it is damaged.....i don't mind pulling pieces off the engine but i'd like to be close to area when i do..LOL

I've just changed the HBV a week ago. I also didn't see it dripping, but if you eliminate all other possibilities ... this is the only logical outcome. And it is known to be weak part in Opel/Vauxhalls. It cost me about 22 £ (in Estonia) and you can change it on your own. be careful not to break or disconnect the vacuum hose coming from firewall. Real pain to put it back in.
