Thermostat renewal problems
« on: 09 July 2008, 17:17:01 »

I tried to renew the thermostat last week on my 3.0 V6 but got really stuck trying to remove the coolant pipe. I couldn't  pull it to the side as stated in the Haynes joke book as the dipstick tube is in the way and catches on the lug that bolts to the cylinder head. How have other members got around this? Is there a knack to it?

All help much appreciated

Tis a pig to remove!

I moved the power steering reservoir out of the way and maneouverd the dipstick to one side.

I used the top hose to help turn the coolant pipe!

Yup.

Move the PAS reservoir and you will get better access to the b-stard bolt.

Rotate the dipstick tube if its in the way but, it should (from memory) be behind the coolant transfer pipe (inbetween the transfer pipe and the lifting eye).

Make sure you have new seals for the transfer pipe to stat (two off) or get a new transfer pipe with them already fitted (about a tenner)

Thought I would call our local "Masterfit" this afternoon to see what the price was for a thermostat replacement.
After several calls back with chassis number/registration etc..the very pleasant guy told me about £337=00 as he couldn,t be sure until it was allstripped out and they saw exactly what bits they required.
I asked what the labour rate was and he calmly told me £92=00 an hour + vat...but he did joke and say it was a 3 hour job and the parts were the cheap bit being about £40=00.
They should issue a health warning on those prices as could cause serious injury....needless to say they won,t be getting my business.
