Prioritise.

First priority is the safety of your son.

If the car doesn't go back into normal mode on a restart, you
can use it, if you wish, by changing the gears manually.
If not happy to use it, pick up son in taxi.

Then start diagnosing gearbox problem with the pressure off.

Mine did this yesterday morning - a restart sorted it out.  Been fine today.  Give it a quick "once up the road" to see if its happy again.

I suspect its something to do with not turning the igntion fully off before restarting, but in an Auto, you tend to stumble enough with dropping into Neutral in the first place!

As grumpy says ...  :y :y

Then, in slow time ... if you are in Limp mode you should have an EML light on.

If the EML light is not on, check it comes on for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on without starting the engine. If it does not come on as a bulb test, then the bulb needs replacing

On some 3.2's you can read the fault codes this way .. :

brake pedal to the floor and accelerator pedal to the floor at the same time, switch ignition to on but don't start engine... the EML will flash a series of times if a fault exists, count the groups of flashes ( BTW 10 flashes = 0 ) and post up the results.

If the EML has no faults it will flash continuously, however I can't see you being in limp mode with no faults ... unless you are not truly in limp mode .. :(

iirc it is usually the switch on the (near) side of the box which causes this.most commonly ingress of water/dirt.

it is possible to fill the atf to the level hole and still
Get the level wrong as you need to engage gears
and re check the level again. I had myn done last friday
And would not mind just checking it again after a week
Just to make sure it has not sucked a bit more into
The torque converter and droped the level a bit.
At least thats my understanding of it anyway. Hope helps.
