Swapping Engines...
« on: 10 August 2008, 09:32:44 »

If you put a 2.5v6 engine from a 98 manual Tourer into a 98 elite estate that previously had a 2.5v6 engine but is an auto...would any changes be necessary?

Tourer has aircon anyway, elite has climate but dont think engine bay is different there? Engines are the same...ECU I wouldnt have thought needs amending if elite one stays in the elite...as far as I can see from engines I have removed once the boxes/clutch/torque converters off its the same...so is there anything I'm misssing thats different, or am I wrong in what I think I know lol

I can't answer your question about the differences between the engines but would have thought that it made sense to leave the current engine in place and see how it goes. I assume you could keep (what I guess is) your known good engine and put it in if this one proves troublesome, but surely much less hassle than swapping unless you already know you have a problem?

Aside from the occasional minor difference here and there, the biggest will be the spigot bearing in the back of the crank (or at least it would have been on a 2.0)  Engine wiring loom will be different, so needs to be disconnected from the engine connector by connector, rather than just unplugged by the fuse box (or are the V6 ones splittable behind the engine - 2.0 one wasn't).  Makes the job about half a day longer...

Flywheel will be different. Ancilliarys for once would be similar as throttle set up onto the plenum is similar. Ignition ECU may be different too due to auto requiring different tick over settings.  Simplest to check the ECU ident to confirm that one though.

If you are keeping the auto box then:
Remove flywheel from manual engine and pull out the needle roller bearing and nylon bush from centre of crank. Move torque convertor flex plate and its adaptor ring to new engine.
Swap complete engine wiring loom from old engine onto replacement.
Check that the 2 hollow dowels in the bellhousing are in place.
Fit new engine.
Fit torque convertor onto gearbox and offer assy upto engine.
Use the engine ecu originally fitted to car.
