How to change coolant header tank?
« on: 13 August 2008, 16:05:57 »

There seems to be a mixed message coming from threads on this forum as to how to go about changing the header tank. Most threads say "oh it's easy" without saying how you actually do it.

Why do I need to use red VX coolant? Is this people being a bit precious?

Does anyone have a definitive guide on how to do it?

Ta muchly.

To remove the header tank, you just need to remove the sprung hose clips and remove a clip from the wing edge of the tank. Slide the bottle inwards towards the centre of  the car and ....... that's it!  ;)

Why use Vx'z pink antifreeze? It's cheap with a Trade Card .... I'm sure there are other positive reasons.
It looks nice in the new header tank!  ;D

Not forgetting to unplug the level sensor if fitted ;)

Vx 5yr 'Red' is fairly cheap (with or without TC).  I'd still change every 2 yrs though.  Old cheap Blue (2yr) needs changing annually really, so is probably false economy

Sorry, I meant how to change the header tank and flush and replace the coolant.

The whole process.

There's no point me unclipping the tank then just pulling the hoses off as that will result in a rather wet engine bay.

That guide seems to be for a V6. Is it the same on a 2.2 DTi?

At the bottom there is mention of a drain block plug for the 2.5TD.

Does the 2.2 DTi have the same?

Just pull the hoses off and let any coolant leak.

Replace tank, replace hoses, top up.

Job's a goodun.

Probably ...... I don't know how much coolant your car holds but I'm sure Mr Haynes give the figure for a 2.0 which will be the same. What ever is, halve the figure, add this amount of antifreeze to the header tank & then top up with water (depending on where you live it might be aswell to add bottled water - caclium content etc).

As far as I'm aware it's just the 2.5TD BMW that has the drain plug on the block.
