A few questions
« on: 26 August 2008, 13:35:23 »

I did warn it would not be long before I started asking loads of questions, so here goes:

I went to the Epsom masterfit to get some part numbers and prices, not that I'd buy from them generally, I just wanted ball park figures so that I know what I should be paying.

Without asking year of model of my car I was told to get 10 40 oil for it, when I went to Halfrauds I just had a look at their guide (not that it is ever normally right) and that said 15 40 oil, so which is it I got 10 40 and will be putting it in later today unless someone advises otherwise.

The oil looked quite clean when I bought the car but I thought I'd change it to be sure, also hoping it will cure or help ID the tapping noise I get on startup for the first mile of driving or so!!! It happens whether the engine is hot or cold and then goes, not the head as I've checked that, it increases in speed with rpm, any ideas/cures, I thought it sounds tappetty (piston slap??) does not effect performance at all.

Any help would be appreciated along with an idiots guide to fixing

Car is P plate 3.0 V6 tourer full dealer history 86k on the clock

Cheers

And lastly, wheel alignment/tracking, are there any special requirements for the car?

Thanks

Ticking when cold could be exhaust manifold.

Alignment, dont waste money on tracking of 4 wheel alignment. Full geometry is the solution for Omegas.  Double the cost of tracking, but tracking really is a waste of time.  See http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk - recommended by many on here, and owner is a member here.

Oh, and for Wheels In Motion, mention OOF for a capped price of £60 + VAT for the geometry check and associated adjustments :y

Oil done, with a flush for good measure.  Wire put on the pad so I'm not driven insane by the warning signal.

The noise the mechanic said is down to gasket manifold

Oil 10w40 semi synthetic
Tapping noise likely to be exhaust manifold but could also be noisy "tappet" (hydraulic lifter) - I had this & it was a tappet - oil change cured completely.

Same here. A few oil changes cured it. :y
