cam belt change?
« on: 07 September 2008, 15:38:09 »

is anyone close to scarborough that want to do it for me?

anyway - whats a rough price for a garage to do it and is it better to get it done at vauxhall cos the back street monkeys dont have a clue?

i dont know when mine was done and i had a look at it today and it looks a bit brittle  :o so i'm thinking to do it now and save my self the inevitable hassle if it goes while driving!

vx generally dont have a very good reputation.they tend to charge the earth and dont always give impressive results. It may be better to get word of mouth reccomendations in your local area, but always check that whoever is doing the job has the correct locking kit.If someone tells you they dont need it,walk away.
There may be some members near you who could help or reccomend a good garage local to you. :y

As said, if you cannot be sure when the belt - and tensioner - was last done, its really best to have them replaced.  4 years or 40k miles....  Also, the proper alignment tool is a must and can be hired from various places.  If you are in any way mechanically competent, get the DVD from the OOF shop and borrow/hire an alignment tool.  Well worth it...   ;)

As above.  You cannot see cam belt unless cam cover removed - suspect the belt that you can see which is brittle is the auxillary or fan belt.  Around £20 from Vx (on Trade Card) - easy to change.

Like already said you can't see the Cambelt without removing several things first. What you can see is the aux belt. Your Cambelt needs to be changed every 4 years or 40,000miles.
I would help you mate but around 150 miles away :-[

Hmmm -- if you don't know when it was done best get it seen to sooner rather than later --- that way you will be confident that it has been done and you will know when next due.

Independant garage will charge around £200-£250 to do the job Main dealers £300- £350. It's aswell to get the water pump changed at the same time. Whoever does it MAKE SURE they have a locking kit
