I found carb cleaner to be the best ... the fact it sprays as well seems to help shift lumps of crud ... so I sprayed, left to stand, sprayed again, etc etc.. :)

did you clean the metal pipe that runs down the side of the block ? passenger side rear as you look at the lump. mine was solid. also worth taking your sump off and cleaning the pick up pipe. again mine was solid, soaked it in thinners over night and it came up like new.

I find it salways worth doing the ICV at the same time.  If breather pipes are gunked up, the icv normally is too.  Pick up a new gasket (only a pound or two) before tackling though.

Need a fume cupboard for that now. Didn't do me any harm. But brake fluid does work. Just wear gloves :y

Its the idle (air) control valve, basically feeds air to the engine when idling so the car doesnt stall.  If your revs are all over the place when you stop, or it stalls often, or between changing gears (in an auto anyway) it normally is a sign it needs cleaning.

If you follow the air intake (the big black tube, has a breather pipe going between it and cam cover) to where it joins the throttle body you should find the icv under its silver metal, and to the right has a connector that looks similar to the one on the MAF.

It tends to get as gunked up as the breather pipes, with the same oil stuff.

There are a couple of guides to cleaning it on the site and this one is pretty complete
