[help needed] Electric radiator fan
« on: 21 November 2008, 22:03:06 »

Hi all. I got the following sympton today. It's very hot today (about some 30ēC) and i got into a big traffic jam in Sao Paulo (one of Brazils biggest cities). Well, the engine got very hot and when the electrical fan started working, it was idling at higher speeds. What could this be?

I cleaned the idle regulator these day, but i was short of carb cleaner, so i decided not to open all the rail/air inlet stuff to clean.

Could be maybe due to some electrical issue involving the fan? Is normal for the fan do go off when you turn off the keys? I saw other cars that keep the fan running even when the car is off... i think its smarter even if it eats some battery, cause you don't leave too hot water around. but i just dont know what 'im talking, i'm no enginneer...

ideas anyone?

TIA!

another silly joke. here the word for "engineer" is "engenheiro", the same word used for a guy that is a "garapa seller" (a kind of hot dog/fish & chips street tent that sell sugarcane juice (garapa) -- i like it!). So when when we wnat to play on a friend we tell the other person the friend's father is an "engenheiro"; this usually get some "oh... which kind of engineer? civil, mechanical...???" Answer: no, he just drives a sugarcane [press] engine... nevermind... stupid joke... just had to say it... ::)

The low speed fan can keep going with ign off.

Was the temp gauge on the dash high?

Hi! Well, looks like the previous owner made some "tuning" then, cause my fan only runs with the engine movement. I think i understand what you said: there's low speed fan, that one driven by the belt, that also have and electrical motor, maybe? And the big fast one outside. That wont go with igntion off.

My gauge went to 110C, what made me concerned for a while, then back to 100C. When i turn engine off, did stuff and started it again, it was marking 110C, then 100C, then again 110C at jam, then 100C on the road.

Thx

Aaahhhhhhhh! Just noticed yours is an Omega-A

In the UK, Omegas are all Omega-B's, we refer to Omega-A as the Vauxhall Carlton.

Don't know much about Carlton, but others do.  I know it has a viscous van (belt driven) and 2 (?) electric fans, temperature controlled.

Ah... ok... :( I have a pdf copy of some manual, but it can't help much in any aspect. I also got a manual for my car... i like the pics, since that thing is written in russian or so.

My car has only one electric fan outside. Later models came with 2, as you said. Here the Model A (Carlton - cigarette brand??? :P) was produced from 1992 to 1998. The caravan was built from 1993 to 1996. GM gives me headache sometimes... The very same car is made in many countries with different names etc, making a lot of confusion. I got relief when i learned the 4L30E trans is the same american thing that fits many models, thus making it a lot easier to fiz just in case...  :D Other stuff is like mining diamonds... lots of work and a little gem from time to time  ::)

Back to the topic. Looks like the electric fan alone is not enough and the electric motor of the other runs faster than the usual idling at 800rpm. That's why a have a hot head... but doesn't explain the cary idling. I'll try cleaning the whole thing tomorrow as it's Sat and I bought a new can of that "stuff"...  :y

We have a few members who previously had Senators or Carltons (though mostly 24v ones) who I'm sure will be able to comment.  Failing that, and excellent resource, though sadly not free, might be autobahnstormers.org.uk

I can't now remember the actual temps but there are two different waxstats available for the Carlton/Senators. There is a 'hot country' version that switches the fan on a little earlier than the standard UK switch ..... 95 deg C instead of 100 seems to ring a bell. I had one fitted to my Senator as the viscous fan was fubar'd & didn'thave a problem.
As TB says you need to ask on the Autobahnstormers site.

Hi Andy and all... Well, i didn't do a thing today, as i tried without success to remove/clean the gear switch (damn it, it's tight under!) and started to rain...

However, the car is running ok again (i did nothing), and thankfully i found at www.abebooks.com some vauxhall carlton haynes' manual for a US$ 1,00... Now i just have to cope with that SOB of mine until the books (bought 2, one for the car toolbox, other for the bookcase) arrives...

Time for a new 4ton floor jack and some tools (bought a 700g ball peen today... love big hammers, i'm into blacksmithing :P)
