if its the same as the 3.2 ( and fairfly sure i have read that it is) then bottom idler is non adjustable type

I've seen some 3.2 / 2.6 without the fixed idler too - just wondering when the cross was  :-/

I have a workshop manual extract at home that might say... Don't discount the possibility that some cowboy had fitted the wrong kit. Have come across variable idlers on 2.6s/3.2s when the kit that has been supplied against the engine number has been fixed.

This has crossed my mind before - but what would be the disadvantge of fitting a concentric lower idler, on a car that's supposed to have a fixed setup, providing it's timed up correctly?

I wouldn't do it, but the question has entered my head...

In reality I can't see it doing any harm. It was made fixed to simplify the procedure IIRC, presumably because the powers that be decided that timing accuracy was adequate without it.

I guess an adjustable one has the ability to work loose and back itself off, but that's hardly an issue on the older engines that have it, and if an idler comes that loose the engine's going to be screwed soon anyway.

I wondered at one point if it was originally adjustable and kits of a later date superceded it with a fixed idler? But you say some 2.6 and 3.2 engines originally have adjustable idlers?
Presumably year of manufacture/engine number will be needed?
