Hising noise from plenum
« on: 07 December 2008, 16:19:45 »

Hi -

I've just done my cambelt, head gaskets and water pump.

Put the car back together - wouldn't start - errors 0120 & 0220.

Realised that I hadn't re-connected the servo vacumn hose at the right rear of the plenum - so I reconnected that....

Now the car starts but there is a HUGE hissing noise from the top of the plenum and the car is revving unsteadily, as if the air level isn't correct.

Any ideas where I should start? It sounds like the breather box on the top of the plenum is leaking!

Thanks in advance!

Think you've answered your own question - air leak top of engine.  Did you take plenum off to do cam belt?

re trace your steps, check the plenum is sitting on its pegs correctly and the seals are present and in the correct position. Re check all connections.

check that the thin pipe coming off the idle speed control valve [it runs towards the bulkhead] isnt stuck under the inlet, when i done my water pump there it happened to me and the pipe being stuck under inlet meant the plenum didnt seal correctly and it hissed like a champion with eractic idling and then stalling

I've had a think about it - it's amazing what being warm and fed will do - and I'm certain that the plenum is not fitted propoerly, or the black breather box is not fitted cleanly on top of the plenum.

Does anybody know what the VX code for the seal from black breather box to plenum is? I'm sure that the circular fitting on the base of the breather box needs a seal to mate with the plenum properly!

Yeah - I've realised that the original seal was split when the breather bridge was re-assembled to the plenum. Just try to get one from VX now, though - all the dealers I called were out of stock. I've resorted to Autovaux for all the seals.

Looks like the car is going to be out of action for the rest of the week!  :(
