Thermostat change

Is it absolutely necessary to change the housing along with the thermostat or can I just change the stat on its own???

Thermostat part of housing unfortunately, replaced mine a couple of weeks ago.  Bit of a bugger but there is a good write up in the maint guide me thinks :y
