headlight adjustment
« on: 26 January 2009, 15:48:45 »

Car failed MOT today on OSF h/lamp adjustment, the guy at my local garage (who I trust) said he had a quick go but couldn't get the beam to come across. Any ideas anyone before I source a new light.

as far as I'm aware there has never been any front end damage.

Unless the adjusters are buggered, should come over OK (and assuming not non UK).

Pull off the rubber at the rear of light see if the light moves about. If so, the adjuster is buggered. Outside screw adjusts height, inside screw does left to right :y

I've just looked behind the light and I take it that the two white screws are the adjusters, if so, they're seized solid, I've sprayed some pen fluid and left it, if this doesn't work is it a case of headlight out to free them up?

just had another look, got the allen keys ok, but when I turn them, the white bits on the inside turn as well, holding them with pliers didn't really help either, are they knackered or are they likely to seize?

going to have another go later up against the garage door with the lights on.

the white bits are supposed to turn as they are the adjusters!, the screws on the front turn the white circular bits which in turn are [or should be] connected to the reflectors, but it is very common for the adjuster inside the lamp to break, if you take the rubber cover off the back of it & prod the rear of reflector it should move about much but if its busted itll move alot, i hope that makes sense :y

On here, s/hand xenons go for £40-50 each, or thereabouts... not sure if yours is xenons or not?

Its a CD so you will have projectors...on facelift models the Xenons were on CDX upwards...

Generally its the up down adjuster that breaks, never heard of the one to adjust left/right breaking but its quite possible...but the adjuster seizing might well have caused the rod inside to bend slightly causing the white bit on the outside to not connect properly...

Might be able to simply fix it by feeling about inside the light and move it about till the white bit rotates the way it should...might need to replace the light...

Unless you have cheap and nasty after market bulbs fitted.

My passanger side beam was virtualy over lapping the drivers side...my MOT guy tried too adjust the direction of beam using the allen key with no luck.

Popped the old bulbs back in and hey presto lights point in the correct direction.

I wouldnt have believed him if it wasnt for the fact i stood there watching him do it.
