draining fuel tank with tank fitted.
« on: 27 January 2009, 20:00:55 »

I desperately need to drain the tank on the grey car, as the half tank of fuel is now 3 years old, and altho the car starts and runs fine im not wanting to leave it til the fuel goes off and fubar the injectors.

whats the best method of extracting all of the fuel?

a home made syphon pump made out of thin tubing and a spare miggy pump doesnt get it all out.

cheers

I would be tempted to cut the main fuel feed pipe to the engine at a convieniant point.  Then fix a suitable lenth of pipe long enough to feed it to a jerry can.  Maybe just after the fuel filter, or even the fuel filter outlet.

Once the pipe is in the jerry can all you need to do is turn the ignition till the warning lights come on and then that powers up the pump.

I would be tempted to pour 5 litres of fresh petrol in again and then flush a bit more out to clear the pipes before refitting.

good idea, but im not gonna cut any pipes.

thinking of running a pipe off the fuel filter outlet into a some 15ltr army fuel cans I have. maybe the fuel will be good enough for the mower.

I fitted some suitable tubing to the tank outlet, and directed it into a jerry can. Turned on the key, and the in-tank pump then did the work for me. Very little fuel was then left in the base of the tank, which I was able to 'mop-up' very carefully with some good-quality cloths.
It will be worthwhile checking/cleaning the fine screen on the pump pick-up/swirl-chamber while it's empty too.

I find drilling a holein the tankworks wellfor draining mostof the fuel...but then I am then going to scrap the car after lol

Disconnecting the pipe before or after the fuel filter seems favorite I would say...then the fuel pump should do the rest...now that I know where the fuel filter actually is I might do this with my next one! lol

Disconnect the fuel filter outlet hose and push a piece of pipe on in its place.

Note, on a V6, you will need to short out the contacts on the fuel pump relay in the ECU box under the bonnet to get the pump to fire.

Right hand side one....assuming they have not been moved (the bases can be unclipped and moved around!)
