Sorry, my mistake Code 72 relating to DIS is for the GM Multec ECU but I`m pretty sure on the Motronic 2.8.1 72 is the throttle switch not running on full load

Nope, not a valid code at all for the V6 Motronic (and I just double checked the reference  )

Remember, there is no throttle swicth

If it will run as described it does sudgest a possible vac leak or a sticking idle valve.

When it ran, was it lumpy or nice and smooth?

yep smooth as allways but died straight away

Not doubting you Mark, but why would it throw a "72". Am I right in thinking that 72 might relate to "first generation 2.8.1" i.e. up to say MY 95/96 or am I just waffling

AFAIK 72 relates to first generation Motronic 2.8.1 ECU
