Is there any chance its an exact or close fit for fitting over the positive terminal of the battery...found similar on one of the batteries I took off, blue one on the negative and red on the postive to colour code the terminals for those that simply cant read the + and - on the battery :y

I wondered that until I noticed the coil spring inside to maintain tension on the shaft it protects.  Far too over-engineered for a terminal ident - definitely a shaft oil seal.
