If you have odd noises coming from the cam belt area I would not run the engine until you've stripped it back down and checked it.

Thanks, this is my job for the weekend. Been using a hire car for the last couple of weeks so I'm hoping I can get it fixed.

Worth double checking the timing is still spot on while you're there. If the belt has been a little slack it may have jumped a tooth. I suspect the knocking is the tensioner rattling against its' stop.

Thanks Kevin, that's a good thought. The timing is going to be the first thing that I'll check - I'm really hoping it is the problem. Will give an update on Saturday.
