Crankshaft pulley
« on: 02 April 2009, 21:01:54 »

Got into the car today, 2.2dti, started the engine and heard something drop, then no power steering.  I looked under the bonnet and the drive belt was lying loose and the belt drive aon the crankshaft pulley had dropped off.  Anyone had any experience of this - is it a big job? are the pulleys easy to get/expensive?
Only good thing is it happened while stationary - that steering sure is heavy with no power!!!

Is your pulley damaged? It should just bolt back on. I don't know the 2.2dti specifically but my V6's pulley is held onto the crank using half a dozen bolts.

from the cursory look I had it looked like the pulley wheel is bonded to the part of the pulley attached to the crankshaft and the bonding has disintegrated - will have a proper inspection tomorrow

Ah! I see ... . You're right about the rubber, the centre part bolts to the end of the crank, but as you say, the outer pulley bit is bonded to the centre bit. I'm sure someone will be able to remember its name - too late for my head to still be working.
New pulley I'm afraid .... or a 'new-to-you'  ;)

my mate had a similar situation with a shogun [i think it was] he somehow done away with the rubber bit, might be worth googling it as it was a common thing on them ;)

If looking for a second hand one then dont forget that this power plant was also fitted to Zafiras, Astra's, Vectras etc.

I seem to recall that they are not to pricey new.

According to local dealers it's a common failiure on all 2.2dti engines - only £152 + vat for the part - my car is definitely worth more dead than alive!!!!

We've had two replaced on our estate first one at 170k and the second at 380k both when miles from home, good job we had recovery! even if you are prepared to struggle without the power steering the belt also spins the alternator and cooling so you wouln't get far.
Maybe it should be a suggested replacement at say 150k ours cost £160 fitted.
