Urgent advise needed re; drive to rear wheels
« on: 03 April 2009, 12:50:23 »

Right, still trying to sort this noise at the rear end. Got the back up on stands, engage drive, the N/S wheel is "driving" but the O/S turns slowly and I can stop it "driving" with my hands and get no resistance. Is this normal or am I looking at a breaked diff or O/S driveshaft :-/

Brakes are OK. Complete overhaul less than 2 weeks ago. Is it normal for just the one wheel to have drive when up on stands. As I said, if I hold the wheel there`s no drive, driveshaft not even turning. Does the diff only supply drive to one wheel until it senses loss of traction :question

if its a standard diff, power will go to whichever wheel is easiest to turn

But if jacked up both sides, I'd expect both rears to rotate same speed if free to turn...

Standard diff. No difference in ease of turning either wheel. Rear of car level on stands :-/

Is it not automatically biased to one side if no resistance is found in either side?

With that in mind is it possible to lower the N/S wheel to ground, keep the O/S raised then engage drive to confirm whether I have drive to the O/S or is that a no go :-/

If you have even slightly more drag on one wheel than the other, with both of them off the ground, only one will turn. What you describe sounds perfectly normal.
