Cambelt - Crank-Lock Tool query

started doing cambelt this afternoon (late start due to guiness)

When you locate the crank lock tool on to the water pump does it sit on the flats or the round bit? Reason i ask is the tool i hired from autovaux doesn't quite want to sit nicely :-/

cam timing gauge fits fine and the camlock keys fit in nicely but just wanted to make sure i'm bang on TDC for my piece of mind when i continue in the morning ;)

If you turn the water pump with finger and thumb as you're locking on, it should get to a position where the tool grabs it quite securely. The tool should have a fixed curvy hooky bit and a straight bit that adjusts up and down - technical terms of course!

it just doesn't fit quite right in my opinion - i was expecting it to grab it as Alex described.

I pressume it has to be on the flat bit on the right as the slidy thing on the tool has a straight edge :-/

I think basically as long as you've got contact on both sides and you can't move the tool side to side by hand then it'll do its job. I don't remember exactly how good a fit it is but you're not putting a whole lot of pressure on it.

Iirc the radious on the tool is longer than the flat area of the pump so it dont come into it. Trouble is in not sure i remember correctly. So cant confirm.

From the pic it looks like the flats are positioned away(not touching) the tool faces, ie on the radious not the flats. But really needs confirming. See what others say.

i think you're right there Chris the flat area will fit inside the radius on the left of tool and locate on the shoulders of radius.
My only worry is the sliding part doesn't fit very well (if you look at it in plan the tool is very slightly out of alignment with the pump and hits a little ridge on the pump?) :-/

i wouldnt worry about the sliding holder clamp bit. Thats just to stop it turning backwards. As long as the main body is firm against the pump...

The key reference is the curve surface against the left side of the water pump pulley (for TDC)..... the lock against the right side of the pulley is there for nothing more than to stop the crank turning anti-clockwise when adjusting the idlers  :y
