frozen locks
« on: 24 December 2012, 12:47:11 »

as in the title, we got down to -19 and i went out and the doors opened fine as i had waxed the seals but the door lock itself froze in the open position which wasn't so bad on the drivers side as i could hold that one and drive but i had opened the rear passenger door to get my snow brush out and the same thing, luckily by the time i had shovelled snow e.t.c the car had warmed up enough to release the rear door so it would close and lock but the drivers door took until i got to work to defrost enough, anyone know a quick fix for this? i geuss over the years the grease in the lock mechanism has broken down and let water mix in with it does anyone know of a product that i could sparay in there to give some protection, i was thinking silicon spray but the original problem will still be the grease that's in there any ideas on a quick way to clean this out, i'm not really interested in taking the pesky door panels off!.

How about chain spray? It's fluid enough to get out of the can, but sticky enough to stay put. Or how about lithium grease in a spray can? >clicky<

There again, it's unlikely to be the actual lock itself - your rear door froze open & there's no lock on it - it'll be the linkages from the handles, interior & exterior, that'll have frozen. I think the door cards will have to come off while you lubricate them all.  ;) ;)
