Steering idler: Symptoms
« on: 25 April 2009, 00:22:34 »

I know how to check the steering idler, but what are the symptoms of a worn idler when driving ?

Well my symptoms were a clunking noise on n/s front when breaking, and excessive wear on the inside of the n/s front tyre. Did both wishbones at around the same time, couldnt believe the amont of movement on the front wheels, bloody deathtrap it was! :o :o :o

it can also cause a "deadspot" in the straight ahead position when driving if you know what i mean? i.e car just doesent feel right when driving in a straight line and you have to keep making tiny corrections to the wheel

As above definate clunking especially on full lock and vague when straight having said that the wishbones wern,t to clever so that won't have helped.£130 for a pattern idler feels much tighter money well spent :)

Yep, that's what I'm getting.
Had a full geometric in the last few weeks and it just doesn't feel right. The last time I had a full Geometric, done at the same place, it was spot on.

:o  You paid how much ?  Please tell me that's a typo.

I paid £30.00 for one for my other Mig about 3 years ago, from Autovaux I think.

Well, the way I look at it is, it's done..it's right...forget about it :y
No matter how cheap it is, there will always be someone that can get it cheaper. Just how long d'ya keep looking ?

If I remember correctly, if the old idler comes off easily it's a ten minute job, so I wouldn't use whoever charge you the £130 ever again.
