V6 Camshaft Damage - opinion please
« on: 14 May 2009, 18:24:50 »

Have noticed a chunk out of one of my exhaust cam lobes, on the 1-3-5 bank, towards the front.

It's not on the part of the cam lobe that presses the follower in - it's on the rounder part of it.

It's quite a chunk, it covers about half the width of the lobe, perhaps just under. The camshaft is still doing it's job. The engine runs fine with no strange noises.

Goes without saying, I will change the camshaft at first opportunity. I just wondered, if anyone thinks it will do any harm to run the car for a few days, until I do.

Can't see any foreign objects that caused it while the cams have been in this engine - and no signs of any "filings" - it's quite possibly a bit of unfortunate previous damage we didn't spot.

Opinions welcome :y

Nope!

The damage doesn't protude, so it runs just the same...

I'm not on about leaving it in there forever, I'm just trying to hedge my bets and weigh up the risk, if I can use it for a few days :y

All fine!
I suspect it's probably a result of a foreign object while in a previous engine...  :-/

Can't see it being a big problem. Question is, how did you miss it when you fitted them? Are you 100% confident it's old damage?

What if the bit that's missing is in the oil / sump ! is it worth draining the oil ! just a thought.

Done - however more likely to be filings, than one big lump I'd guess.

I'm certain it must have happened in a different engine. I'd have thoguht I'd have heard it, if it happened in this one. I've only run while listening under the bonnet!

I have posted around 8 sets of Cams and none have been damaged in postage so could have been damaged before hand if you have bought them :(
