Replacement cats V6
« on: 15 May 2009, 15:54:13 »

After I get the cambelt change out of the way the next major job on my car is the cats.

I know mine are tatered despite the fact that they managed to just pass the emissions part of the MOT here. I can hear one lot of "ceramics" rattling around and they are both noisy. The problem here is a lot of the roads are unmade and I haven't got a sumpguard (yet). I dare say they have been stifling the engine for years.

I have sort of half been tempted with aftermarket cats at perhaps £80 each plus postage e.g.  http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/cat_display.php?txtmodel=OMEGA&Submit=Next&txtmake=VAUXHALL  but have read that they can cause EML problems. The alternative is either a pair of S/H ones known to be OK or new from VX but how much would they be?. Money is an issue sadly.

What is the forum advice? Also how hard are the sensors to change having been in place for ten years!?

A good set of 2nd hand ones is what i would do.

Are you sure its the cats rattling and not just the heat sheild around the downpipes which can be sorted with a very large jubilee clip??

One is definitely fubarred. I have had them off several times during two gearbox changes. You can hear the bits inside rattling. I already have big jubilee clips on as the heatshields were loose. I think the only reason it scraped through the MOT was that it had a 30 mile run before the test and I went straight in.
