Auto gearbox fluid, how, where pics ?
« on: 21 May 2009, 18:27:40 »

I would like to top up the gear box fluid ( change it completly ideally but I have seen what a faff that is ) just to ease my mind.

Thing is I don;t know where to start, I guess a garage will charge a health margin over the £30 for the fluid so would like to just do the best I can.

Can anyone help me with a picture of the underneath and where to look. Some people have said there is a drain plug ? if so is there a place where you can drain the fluid and then anther place you can top it up from  ( I realise without dropping both the sumps I won;t get it all changed.)

If there is a drain plug, how much would drain off for it with out dropping the sumps ?

10%, 20%. I am thinking if I can get rid of as much of the old stuff as possible then top up it better than just topping it up.

There is no drain plug unfortunately, the only method is to take both sumps off.Its an easy enough job to do and allows you to clean or replace the filter which is a good idea.
The problem is its potentially a very messy job which is what tends to put people off.
The level/filler plug is on the drivers side of the box on the side off the sump, easy to find. :y

Ok I think I will try and top it up myself using above advise and see if that helps, wait til mate with a garage has some time and then change the lot ( he can show me and I can learn whilst he get messy ).

i done mine last week heres a few words of warning . befor you start make sure the sump plug will come undone mine wouldnt and i ended up changing sump ( yet again RobseyMV6 came to the rescue with a replacment ) i used a syphon pump like a reverse greese gun to suck the new fluid from the bottle and pump into the sump . when you check the level the first time make sure the car is running  :-/
