has to be a vodafone or an 02 sim.
won't work with orange.
will work with a virgin sim as well ( they buy airtime from voda)

If its the standard Vx fit then it will be GSM only, so Vodafone or O2 only in the UK.

PAYG would be free from thier Web sites.

Vodafone sort of do a Dual Sim on the same number on contract if you push them hard enough, but you will lose any GPRS and 3G Data on the sims.

I think you will find Virgin piggy backs the T-Mobile Network so that wont be GSM.

Virgin uses T-Mobile GSM 1800mhz

your choices are

Tesco Mobile GSM 900
O2 GSM 900
Vodafone GSM 900
BT-Mobile GSM 900

o2 will give you a free sim if you ask nicely enough in an o2 store

As said, 900Mhz GSM is what you need, which is O2 and Voda (or people who piggy back off them). Everyone will give free SIMs.  I think you can even get cashback from cashbackkings (see sig)
