I'm about to carry out a service on my 2.2 (2001) and i think the auto fluid and filter need changing as I cannot find any receipts to suggest it has been done in the past (had car 6months with 92,000 on clock) garage I have used in the past says it,s not easy and is expensive??? any help guys

It's not at all mechanically challenging - actually quite easy - the only downside is that it's darn messy!! 

Because there is no drain plug, both sumps must be removed, emptied, and re-fitted.

There is also some benefit to changing the filter, which is accessible with sumps off.

Re-fill with Dex 3 - about 7 litres IIRC

Very messy, or at least it was for me. I'd definately recommend using a ground sheet. Would have saved me a lot of grief from the wife.

2 things I found tricky - cleaning off the old gasket and getting the new oil in. Other than that, pretty straight forward.

Oh and remember you need the car level when refilling. This for me involved 2 ramps, 2 axle stands (and 2 trolley jacks just supporting the axle stands to be on the safe side).

I use a green plastic garden potting up tray. It is about 3 foot by 3 foot and has a lip all the way around. Let the gearbox oil run into that, pull it out and pour away wherever you recycle. Quick wipe with a rag and you can press it into use for a receptacle for parts removed from the car on other jobs.

Best £12 I have ever spent. You can even use it for potting up!
