Strange oil warning...
« on: 22 June 2009, 15:21:29 »

driving around town no faster than 40mph; no sign of the warning on the CID.

but out on the open road, 50mph+ and particularly at 70mph i get the "CHECK OIL LEVEL" warning fairly often. maybe 6 times in 40miles travelled.

oil level is fine and always has been fine since i got the car, definitely isnt burning any. no oil light on the dash either

i assume its a sensor giving duff readings.....any other ideas?

I get this an all, and the oil is only after being changed so is at max!

Be good to know whats causing it?

Lol, same here. Thought it was something to do with the rocker gasket at first, but thinking it is the sensor now.

If the oil is halfway between min and max, this is normal, particularly on hotter days.  Keeping it up nearer max stops this.

Other than that, sensor (particularly if poorly serviced in the past) or wiring issue.

umm my oil level would be bang on between the two markers so ill top it up nearer the max and see. and your right, it is mostly on hotter days it happens

why would it do that? is it something to do with the oil cooler?

It's more likely to be the oil level sensor.

However, it's a sump off job to get to it. Try the oil level top up first.

Please, please, check oil level after 5 minutes after engine has stopped, on flat ground, then top-up to max level. Problem is the oil sump is flat in design, so at speed, even worse up hill, the oil flows to the rear ie away from the sensor.
So always keep oil at maximum level.

I got this message when I was towing my caravan back home (from Northampton to York) and I had 'Selective' reading I think, and just read the 'Oil' part and thought the worst! :o :o

Bearing in mind this was the second time I've ever towed, I was on my own, and was about 100miles away from home! On top of that, I was worried that the car was running a bit hot too!  :-X :-X

Slowed down a little bit, and then I remembered that the worrying message is 'Oil Lack' not ‘Check Oil Level’, so panic over!  ;D

Checked the oil when I got home, and it was about 2/3 up between the Min – Max. :y
