Battery type for auto in hot weather
« on: 04 July 2009, 18:47:30 »

My battery was flat the other day after using the air con in 38 deg heat. Seem to have this problem every summer. I will get it and charging tested on Monday now I have had a good run in it.

Do Omegas have anything else in hot countries compared to the UK spec of mine? Should I fit say 100 amp hour battery ? The air con works acceptably well and has never had a recharge or service other than annual pollen filter change. Maybe it needs a recharge? How do you know? The fan runs for maybe five minutes after switching off which can't help.  Maybe I will just have to switch the air con off 10 mins before getting home!

Any suggestions?

I run my air-con every day right up to the front door, and no problems here.
So....here's where I'd be....

1. Your battery is not quite "cutting the mustard" any more.
It's not quite beyond it's useful life, it just needs a bit of care to eke that extra few months out of it.
If it is the battery, you will be changing it come this winter anyway.

2. You have a bit of a lazy alternator.
Again, no big deal as such - but something you may want to bear in mind if this is the case.

:o I thought it was mainly extra fuel that was the only downside of having A/C on permanently, due to the additional load on the engine in driving the compressor. Didn't realise it drew that much electrically.

changed my battery recently for a genuine Gm one rather than the cheaper Go ones vx uk also do on trade club. Its a 66ah or there abouts iirc. I did enquire re 85ah and let me assure you, it is Massive. A full 4 inches longer than the one i have and no chance on earth of it fitting in the battery holder. So fairly sure 100ah wont fit either.

Kevin Wood has done a fairly comprehensive battery/alternator diagnostic guide in maintainance section if you have a meter. Also worth checking the battery terminal clamps are also crimping the cables tightly as well as the terminals and not getting hot, also as Kevin advised me.
If your on your second battery in a year, dont batterys come with a 2year warrenty? Worth checking, or maybe the one you have is poor quality?

As said i had my ac on flat out for most of the week and no issues here. Wouldnt expect the old battery to play up either tbh. And if your battery is holding charge for 3 or 4 days parked up, i wonder if you have a charging/alternator issue? Mine would loose charge parked up for a weekend and set the Alarm off when started on Monday morning.

Excellent link and suggestions.

In the past the batteries have given up on two years and two weeks so always just out of guarantee. This one is one year old so I can go back to the garage that supplied it.

I haven't got a multi meter but have been thinking of getting one. EBay.co.uk will be my best bet. Any suggestions on a cheap and cheerful meter for this sort of work off ? What about 370145975642  ?

I will also have a look at the cable connections at battery end. I have never heard the power sounder on my car and suspect it was disconnected before we bought it 10 years + ago

In the meantime will try some self help. Switch air con off a mile from home, use windows etc!!! :) :)
