Basic Service How to....
« on: 06 July 2009, 09:37:41 »

My oldest son (11) wants to start learning about cars so now instead of being lazy and using the local garage I will have to start doing things myself....

So we are going to start with a basic 10k service. Everything was changed at the last service so this should be a simple one, just an oil, oil filter and air filter change. As I dont have the haynes book of lies (but will be investing in one!) I just have a couple of numpty questions:

Sump plug - do I need to replace with a new one every service, or is it just a new washer, or are no parts required at all ?

Fuel filter - does it need replacing every 10k , it was done at last service I wasnt planning on doing it this time unless there is a good reason.

Cheers

On yours, you do not need to replace sump plug or sump washer (it doesn't have a washer, just a rubber seal).

All you need is the correct oil filter (check before buying, yours is likely to be spin on, but may be paper filter), and the oil.  I'd recommend both from dealer on TC ;)

Fuel Filter is every 2yrs, so no need to change.

You know where I am if you want a hand first time around.

Ahh good news on the washer then , one less thing to worry about. I'll get all the bits on TC from Bridge - I've bought oil filter from them twice in the past just had it fitted by the garage so they know which one I need :)

I may call on you for help TB when tackling something more complicated in future !

Cheers

I think it's great that you're teaching a young lad to be
self-sufficient in car maintenance.  :y

May I be a bit cheeky and suggest that you instill into
him the most important aspect of car maintenance
whilst he's young and receptive?

Personal Safety

If you don't normally use axle stands, start using them
religeously so that he sees Dad using them and it
becomes second nature to him.

Dad will also take any rings off his fingers before he
starts work. Ever seen a finger ripped off with the
tendons still attached and dangling in the breeze?
I have.  :o

Dad never puts his hands near the moving parts when
the engine's running or leans over it with loose clothing
or long hair that isn't secured back.

I'm sure you get my drift, young lads will copy their
Dads, so you're going to have to set a shining
example.  :y

Great thing that you're doing and I wish you all the best.  :)

If you have the storage (ie, the missus doesn't see!) get 4 x 5l semi synth, its on a 4 for price of 3, so comes out at £32 + VAT (or there abouts) for 4 x 5l cans :).

Help always on hand here, and I suspect the useless student tunnie will always be keen to lend a hand to local members :y

Sound advice :y  Start them off so that it's second nature to put safety first

Well you know my Mrs doesnt like me storing too many parts TB  :-/ . But if I use 1 can for the service (+ a bit obviously) , keep 1 in the TVR, 1 in her car and 1 in the Miggy then theres none to go in the garage and everyones a winner  :)
