Are Vauxhall's taking the p*** or what!!
« on: 22 July 2009, 20:12:31 »

Had my car in to VX main dealer today and had them check why my refurbed abs ecu unit is still showing a traction control light on and they ran a tech 2 test on it and say that they want .......................wait for it....................................... :( 1,615 of our British pounds to fit a new abs ecu unit. :o Now I have heard figures of anywhere between 700 - 900 to fit by main dealer on here but this is truely shocking, would cost more than the car is worth ffs!!!

makes my original (non vx garage) repair bill of just the removal and refitting of 400 quid seem a bargain.

Vauxhall main dealers are getting toooooo expensive I have just been quoted £114 + vat for a water pump that was little over £20 a few months ago by all accounts !!!!

It doesnt encourage business to them, i dont mind paying extra for genuine parts but over four times the price is riddiculous for trade.  I empathise with you. :-/

Was quoted by Evans Halshaw 1400 quid for an oil cooler replacement and flush, said they would have to replace the rad as well.Told them the rad wouldn't need changing so they requoted 900 quid.I asked why they were charging me 500 pounds for a rad, they said it was for extra work.Laughed at them and said no thanks.Bought all parts for 95 pounds and corner garage did it for 285.

Well I did think that at first as I have seen a few posts saying that but then again I have seen other posts saying it is a pig to do. Coupled with the fact that I don't have any drive on ramps or even a trolly jack it seemed easier for a garage to do.

It is no problem anyway as I am sending the unit back as under waranty as a main dealer and an independant garage have both said the abs ec unit is still faulty after the refurb company was supposed to fix it, they ill be paying for the removal and refit as well so think I will not have to pay anything. was just curious to see what vx charged when it was in today.

Don't need ramps or a jack, 6 screws I think it is 5 are easy 6th is a right pig but took me 3 hours I think. I didn't remove anything from the car either other than the ABS ECU ovbiously  :y

A second opinion:-

Yes it's not easy to get to and the bolts need just the right length driver.  I had to remove several bits (coolant pipe, slacken power steering pipes etc.) to get enough access and I'm not chubby!

Magnetic screw-retriever was a big help.

Mine's a 3l Elite FWIW.

no need for any of that.
it comes out from the top. no need to jack

buy a long flexible driver and a a long torx bit

torx bit is a T20 if i remember rightly just make shaw
you get the long one

remove the engine bay fuse box and battery remove pas resowire

and top radiator hose move wireing

undue the two nuts that hold abs pump
so you can lift pump up

the top two screws that hold the ecu on are easy to remover

easyest way to get other 4 out is to lift up pump a bit
and have a m8/second person undo the last 4 with the flexible driver

lust lift it up far enough so m8 can get at bolts
if you dont go mad it wont hurt lines in to pump

just do same to put it back

oh and don't forget to top up the pas reservoir after refitting it

reason for removing the pas reservoir is so you can get at the nuts easy with a spanner that hold down the abs pump

and to bleed it just run engine and go full lock to full lock a few times to air is out then make shaw you top it up to right level

and just check late in case of a bit of air is still in there in top up as necessary

dont worry about the racket and noise the steering makes when you start it as it will shut up as soon as you full lock the steering both ways a few times

seriously you can do the job in a bout a hour and that with a few cups of Coffey and a fag

if you do it the above way

I spent hours a hole day trying to do it until i figured the above out
